Thugs from the NPP who invaded UTV were convicted and fined GH2,400 apiece.

Sixteen New Patriotic Party (NPP) members who attacked United Television (UTV) on Saturday, October 7, 2023, were convicted and punished by the Achimota Magistrate Court. They were charged with unauthorized entry and scheduled to appear in court on October 16, 2023. The accused pleaded guilty, resulting in their conviction and a punishment of 200 penalty units (GH 2,400.00), or three months imprisonment in default. They were also required to sign a bond for good behavior, with a 6-month prison sentence if they did not.

Attackers halted the live broadcast of UTV’s ‘United Showbiz’ prime-time entertainment show on October 7 and threatened the presenter and guests. These assaults were allegedly headed by the NPP’s Klottey Korle Youth Organizer and were acting on the orders of Ernest Owusu Bempah, the ruling party’s Deputy Director of Communications, and other key persons.

According to them, the show had devolved into a forum where the administration was routinely harshly criticized in an unprofessional manner.

They said that A Plus, a political activist and regular panelist on the show, tore apart a letter from the NPP to UTV management in order to reform the show.

Following that, the police apprehended and prosecuted them.
